How to Get a Tattoo in Benidorm When You Don’t Speak Spanish

A practical guide for international visitors to Aaron Sanchis Tattoo

By Aaron Sanchis | Aaron Sanchis Tattoo, Benidorm

Here’s a worry I hear from international clients more often than you’d think: «I’d love to get tattooed while I’m in Benidorm, but I’m not sure how that works when I don’t speak Spanish.»

It’s a reasonable concern. A tattoo is a permanent decision, and the last thing you want is to end up with something you didn’t actually ask for because something got lost in translation. You want to feel confident that the person doing the work actually understands what’s going in your skin – and that you understand what’s happening at every step.

So let me walk you through exactly how it works here.

The short answer: language is not a barrier

Our studio works with international clients every single week. Benidorm is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Europe, and a significant part of our client base comes from the UK, Germany, France, the Netherlands, and further afield.

We communicate in English on a daily basis. Our website is available in seven languages for a reason – not as a gimmick, but because it reflects who actually walks through our door. If your Spanish is limited to «una cerveza, por favor», you are going to be absolutely fine.

How the consultation works

Before any tattoo begins, we have a consultation. This is non-negotiable regardless of what language you speak, because it’s the part that turns a vague idea into a tattoo you’ll actually love.

For English-speaking clients, the consultation works exactly the same as it would in Spanish. We talk through:

  • What you want – the design, the concept, the mood you’re going for
  • Where you want it – placement on the body, size, orientation
  • Any references you have – images from Instagram, Pinterest, photos, or anything that shows the direction you’re thinking
  • Your skin and your history – whether you have other tattoos, any sensitivities, anything we should know

References are your best friend here. A good photo or screenshot removes 90% of the potential for miscommunication, regardless of what language either of us speaks. If you have a clear image of the style, the motif, or even just the general feel you’re going for, we’ll understand it.

How to communicate your idea before you arrive

The easiest way to get started is to message us before your holiday even begins. We’re on WhatsApp at +34 606 900 674 and we respond in English.

When you message us, just:

  1. Tell us what you want in plain language – don’t worry about using the right technical terms. «Something with waves and a compass, kind of vintage-looking» is more than enough to start a conversation.
  2. Send references – screenshots, saved posts, anything visual. The more you show us, the clearer the picture we get.
  3. Tell us your dates in Benidorm so we can check availability and plan the timing properly.

We’ll confirm that we understand your idea, give you an honest estimate on time and price, and schedule a slot that fits your holiday – not one that takes up your first or last day.

On the day: what to expect

When you arrive at the studio, the process is straightforward and there are no surprises.

We’ll go through the design together before anything else. You’ll see exactly what’s going to be tattooed, in the size and placement we agreed on. If anything doesn’t look right – the proportions, the details, anything – we stop and we fix it before we start. Not after.

During the session, if you need to communicate something, just say it or gesture. Want a break? Say so. Something feels off? Tell us. We’ve been doing this long enough to know that good communication during a session makes the difference between a client who leaves happy and one who has doubts they don’t voice until it’s too late.

A few useful phrases if you want them

You really don’t need these – we’ll manage just fine without them – but if it makes you feel more comfortable:

  • «¿Puedes mostrármelo antes?»Can you show me before? (asking to see the stencil before starting)
  • «Necesito un descanso»I need a break
  • «¿Cuánto tiempo más?»How much longer?
  • «Me gusta»I like it
  • «¿Puedo verlo?»Can I see it?

That last one – asking to see the work in progress – is something we actively encourage regardless of language. We have mirrors, we pause, we check. It’s part of how we work.

What we guarantee

When you book with us as an international client, here’s what you can count on:

  • English communication from your first message to the end of your session.
  • A design you approve before we start – we do not put needle to skin until you’ve seen and confirmed the stencil.
  • Honest timelines and pricing communicated clearly before any commitment.
  • Written aftercare instructions in English to take with you so you know exactly how to look after your tattoo for the rest of your holiday and beyond.
